Rolls-Royce Materials Masterclass For Technology Teachers

12 June 2008 by stuartr

Materials science is an important growing discipline that has strong crossover in design and technology, and science teaching. Most major breakthroughs in the performance of the products used in engineering and industry come down to new developments in the performance of materials. It is a fascinating and challenging field which offers rewarding career opportunities.

The Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers, The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and Rolls-Royce plc all share a common interest in the discipline of materials science and are committed to help support raising standards in science and technology education and generating enthusiasm for materials as a field for further study.

As such the three organisations have developed the Materials Masterclass for science and design and technology teachers at Key Stage 4 and A-level. The course takes place on the 25 and 26 September with a visit to Rolls-Royce plc in Derby completing the course on Tuesday 14 October. During the three days you will learn about the development, testing and practical the impact of ground breaking new materials from polymers to shape memory alloys.

The Materials Masterclass is designed to support curriculum delivery. It draws on the areas of materials science in which Rolls-Royce has experience and can demonstrate examples of applications. It offers an extension to your personal knowledge in the field as well as resources and ideas to take back to the classroom.

The course only costs £30.00. This subsidised fee contributes to the cost of meals and one night’s accommodation at Lucas House, the University of Birmingham’s Conference Centre. By applying for the course you will also receive a free membership to the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining Schools’ Affiliate Scheme.

So if you’re a design and technology teacher looking to expand your knowledge of materials for use in the classroom or a science teacher with a keen interest in the rapidly developing world of materials science, then why not apply for a place at the Materials Masterclass course!
